I've started a seed database (excel file) so I can quickly see how many varieties of one type of seed I have. And also to quickly see what season the seeds should be planted during. Here's a screen shot of my database.
The yellow rows are the summer plants, green rows are the winter plants. But truthfully, I'm in San Diego, I plant a lot of these all year around. And for example, with lettuce, I do. I try to keep a head of lettuce ready at all times -- so basically that means have a LOT of lettuce growing so that I can pull a leaf off here and a leaf off there. As you can see, I have about 9 varieties of lettuce -- plus spinach and kale and swiss chard. So that makes for a lot of salad leaves I can pull.
The other columns in the spreadsheet are: Vegetable Type, Variety Name, Year Packed (for the seed), Month to Sow the Seeds, and # of Days to Harvest.
I'm trying to be creative about planting some plants that have shorter harvests (like radishes at 25 days, and some lettuces) and not so much the plants with the really long harvests (like onions at 100+ days). I just don't like to wait! I want to eat my veggies ASAP! I don't want to wait 3+ months to see if my plant is growing right. I get a thrill out of seeing my veggies growing, so waiting 3+ months isn't going to fly.
